where: Hoàn Kiếm (14 Ngô Văn Sở, Trần Hưng Đạo)
price range: 180k VND/person
setting: converted french-style villa
group friendly: yes
stand-out dish: vegan pho
hot tip: wander up to the second floor to see traditional art, artifacts, and instruments lining the walls
Stepping into Le Tonkin's high-ceilinged dining room sets the mood for a special, albeit bit stuffy meal. The all-you-can-eat menu features simple vegan dishes and vegan versions of traditional Vietnamese cuisine. The dishes are presented beautifully, but the flavors are hit or miss. We most enjoyed the mushroom cháo, fried sticky rice, and vegan phở.
verdict: A good spot to celebrate a special occasion or to bring vegan visitors, but too pricey for what is being offered.
